Nwator Blames Moral Decadence On Materialism
A United Nations for Peace Ambassador, Bishop Friday Nwator has attributed the high rate of moral decadence in the society to the craze for materialism.
Bishop Nwator, who said this in an interview with newsmen as part of activities to commemorate his 70th birth day anniversary, also expressed fear over the success of the Amnesty programme.
He noted that the craze for material gains has made many people, especially the youths, to devise means of making quick money, a situation which, he noted, has led to increase in crime rate among Nigerians.
Bishop Nwator stressed the need for a return to what he called “the good old days which virtue was promoted above mediocrity in both public and private life”.
Meanwhile, Bishop Nwator has called for the involvement of men of God in the on-going amnesty programme for militants in the Niger Delta.
He argued that the mere collection of guns from militants is not enough to guarantee the success of the amnesty, stressing that the militants need to be internally reformed to enable them to be useful to the society.
The Clergy man, who was a Special Adviser to the Rivers State Government on inter-religious matters also called on the government to put in place a social security scheme for the elderly in the society, while job opportunities should also be created for the teeming unemployed youths in the country.
He said that although he is 70 years old, he will not relent in his effort to ensure global peace and the fight for the elevation of the down trodden in the society.
The celebration is billed for tomorrow at the Ministry of Justice Conference hall, Port Harcourt.
