FG Explores Utilising Armed Forces In Civil Service – Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan said on Saturday that the Federal Government was exploring the possibility of utilising the Armed Forces in the Civil Service.
Inaugurating the headquarters of the Navy Logisitics Command built by the Delta Government in Oghara community, the President said the consideration was in line with what obtained in developed countries.
He noted that the Armed Forces were not mere professions whose service should be restricted to carrying of arms.
He commended the Delta Government for building the Command’s edifice with its own resources, adding that “this is unlike the trend when some state governments will demand for fund before building.”
The President said that logistics was quite important in every operation, but stressed that maintenance was also a major problem to Nigerians.
“Nigerians have not done well in the area of maintenance. It is now like a culture Nigerians have imbibed and there is the need to change that,’’ he remarked.
Jonathan urged the Navy to endeavour to maintain the structure and ensure its judicious utilisation.
Also speaking on the occasion, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, said that the construction was part of his administration’s programmes of completing projects started by his predecessor.
Uduaghan said that the construction was the state government’s assistance to the Navy, adding that it was also in consonance with its agenda of providing peace and security in the state.
While also commending the state government and the people for their magnanimity, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ishaya Ibrahim, described the headquarters as a “beautiful edifice.”
