Commissioner Attributes Tanker Explosion To Bad Road
The Rivers State Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, Dr. Dawari George has attributed the tanker explosion at KM 16, Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway, which claimed some lives to the deplorable state of the road.
Dr. George gave the hint at Eleme while commiserating with the executive of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union (PTDU), an affiliate of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) over the death of some of its members in the fatal accident.
The commissioner, who expressed deep sympathy with the union over the deaths, announced that the Rivers State Government has taken drastic steps to nib further occurrences in the bud.
Part of the measures to check the ugly situation, according to the commissioner, is the award of contract for the immediate rehabilitation of the affected road, despite the fact that it is the responsibility of the Federal Government.
Dr. George also thanked the executive of the union for the existing harmonious relationship between them and the Rivers State Government, and assured of the continuous support of the government in their activities.
In his response, the Chairman, Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union, Chief John Amaguoyi, thanked the commissioner, for commiserating with them over the dead of their members.
The chairman described the visit as a mark of concern by the Rivers State Government over the affairs of the body.
He further expressed displeasure over the incident, and blamed the Federal Government for the deplorable state of most federal roads.
He called for quick intervention to save tanker drivers and other road users from further disaster.
