Commendation Trails Rivers “Operation Zero-Pothole Scheme”
The Rivers State Government has been commended for responding timely to the difficulties faced by motorists and commuters as a result of poor state of some roads in Port Harcourt metropolis and its environs.
The commendation, is part of the state government’s road maintenance scheme tagged “Operation Zero Pot Hole”, was unveiled recently by the state Ministry of Works to rid the metropolis of bad roads and craters.
Some members of the public who hailed the state government for the timely intervention, said it would reduce the growing traffic jams experienced in Port Harcourt in recent times.
President of Ogoni Media Workers, Comrade Godwin Williams called on the authorities to spread the exercise to the outskirt, which, most times, are abandoned during such operations.
Comrade Williams also tasked officials of the ministry to ensure that qualified contractors are used in carrying out the exercise in order not to waste public funds.
Similarly, a private transport operator at the Abali Park in Port Harcourt, Mr. Perkins Ibifubara hailed the exercise, calling it a quick response to the cries of motorists and commuters who have suffered untold harshsip from bad roads.
Mr. Ibifubara, however, stated that the scheme be conducted in phases to ensure that all parts of the state are adequately covered.
He cited the spots at Intels Junction, along Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway and another one at Artillery Junction as those that require urgent attention.
Mrs Rita Pokubo, on her part expressed the belief that the exercise would save motorists the pains of plying some routes in the city. In her words: “it is the road that all of us use so we are extremely glad that something is being done about the affected roads.”
While calling on the contractor in charge of the zone that covers Ada-George/Wimpey and Ada-George by Agip Junctions to mobilies to site, Mr. Pokubo expressed the hope that respite would come the way of car owners when the roads are properly fixed.
It would be recalled that the Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Dakuku Peterside had, during a press briefing, informed the media that the Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi had directed that all pot holes on roads within Port Harcourt and its environs be covered ahead of the rainy season.
To this end, the sum of N1 billion has been approved for the exercise.
