Taxi Levy:Drivers Pose As Co-operative Members
Following the increasing harassment that commercial drivers and other transport operators face on the road, particularly with the activities of revenue agents in Port Harcourt, and with the accompanying pressure and resistant to these being put in place by Rivers Transport and Investment Cooperative Union Limited (TICUL), non-members of the cooperative now impersonate members of the cooperative body.
The Tide’s finding has shown that some of the vehicles that have the inscription of the transport cooperative are not registered with the union, and that they use that method to escape the harassment of revenue agents and those that impersonate as local government council revenue agents.
Some of these impersonator transporters, The Tide has gathered, go as far as issuing fake cooperative identity by themselves just to deceive revenue agents knowing that these revenue agents are aware of the legal battle and resistance the cooperative group will mount on impoundment and harrassement of their vehicles (s).
Confirming this to The Tide in Port Harcourt, the President of the Cooperative transporters, and a social crusader, Mr. Tubonimi Wokoma said that, of recent, a driver confessed to him that he just used the name of cooperative transporters to escape from the embarrassment of touts, even when he is not registered with the group.
Luck ran out on the said driver when he was held by those who identified him as a non-cooperative member, which led to his confession after some arguments.
Wokoma remarked, however, that such impersonation, though wrong in the sense of non-registration as cooperative members, but that it shows that the efforts that his group has made so far is indeed remarkable, adding that, such scenario will also go a long way to advertise the cooperative transporters more.
Also, a source from the directorate of cooperative affairs of the state ministry of commerce has lamented over the multiplicity of vehicles with the inscription of the cooperative, even when they are not registered with the body.
Reliable sources from the supervisor of cooperative unit of the ministry of commerce has hinted that actions will be taken very soon to track down those unregistered persons and their vehicles in Port Harcourt.
