Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers has ascribed setbacks in the implementation of the state government’s projects to the failure of indigenous contractors to deliver.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting with journalists in Port Harcourt, yesterday, the governor said majority of the indigenous contractors who were given contracts failed to implement them.

He said the state government has as result, changed its initial policy of “Rivers money for Rivers people to Rivers money for any competent contractor”.

“Just show me any failed project, by the time you investigate, you will find out that it is being handled by a Rivers indegenous contractor.

“So we have decided to only give our jobs to qualified and competent contractors, irrespective of where they come from,’’ he said.

He said the state government has also resolved to set up management teams for all of its projects to ensure that no contractor went to sleep after receiving mobilisation funds.

The governor described funds as the major problem facing the state government in its bid to deliver laudable projects that would benefit the generality of the people.

“With the fall in what comes from the centre, only God knows how we have been able to achieve what we have on ground so far. “As you all know, we are running a government of change, so we need enough funds at our disposal, especially as we took over from a government that had so much money,” Amaechi said.

He used the occasion to reiterate his preparedness to govern the state to the best of his abilities in such a way that its impact would be felt positively.
