Rivers Votes N1bn For Road Repairs
The Rivers State Government has approved N1 billion for roads maintenance and rehabilitation, Commissioner for Works, Mr Dakuku Peterside, has said.
Peterside told newsmen in Port Harcourt, yesterday that Governor Chibuike Amaechi directed that all roads must be made accessible ahead of the rainy season.
“We have observed in the recent past that whenever we get to the peak of the rainy season, most of our roads become impassable and we are committed to ensuring that the roads are, all year round, in good condition in line with our vision,” he said.
Peterside said in line with the governor’s directive, his ministry decided to carry out a dedicated road maintenance and rehabilitation programme code named “operation zero pothole”.
“That operation is an interventionist programme dedicated to eradicating all potholes on our roads between now and the month of June to ensure that all our roads are in good condition and to also ensure that our roads are flood free,” he said.
The commissioner said five contractors had been hired for the project and Port Harcourt city had been divided into zones with each contractor working on a dedicated zone while engineers from the ministry would supervise them.
Peterside said major construction work on some roads in the state would go on in spite of the rehabilitation programme.
“Most of the roads are under contract. In some cases, they cannot start now because they will be trapped by the rain. The contractors will commence work as soon as the rains stop.
“We are also effecting the repair of major roads in Port Harcourt township. We are providing drainage and resurfacing the roads.
“Contract for that has been awarded to three different companies. We are just waiting for the appropriate time to commence work,’’ he said.
