Lawmaker Presents Statistical Data Bill To RSHA

The Rivers State statistics bill 2010 sponsored by the Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Isaac Kamalu, has been presented to the House.

Hon. Kamalu during the presentation stressed that in order to keep adequate data in the state, a statistical system should be introduced to enable ministries and government parastatals check the cause of unreliable statistical duplication of data in the state.

The Chief Whip also noted that the passage of the bill would raise public awareness about the importance and role of statistical information to society, as well as  promote the use of best practices and international standards in statistical production.

He explained that the success and failure in the administration of every state in the country lay in the management of information, asserting that any weakness in data collection and collation would affect the activities of government at all levels.

Hon. Kamalu thanked the Speaker and his colleagues for the privilege given to him to present the bill.

Also speaking, the House Committee chairman on Agencies and Commission, Hon. Onari Brown, member representing Akuku-Toru constituency 1, in his submission expressed satisfaction with the presentation of the bill.

He emphasised that ghost-workers, fake data by individuals and companies operating in the state are numerous, adding that this bill would help to reduce the proliferation of such in the state.

The Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Dumnamene Deekor who presided over the proceedings of the House described the bill as timely and comprehensive because it sought to raise public awareness and information dissemination in a coordinated manner.
