Bayelsa Women In Agric Solicit Govt Support
A group of women in Bayelsa State that engage in subsistence farming have appealed to the State government to adopt holistic approach on issues that pertain to agriculture in the state.
The women also want the Federal and State Government to look into their plights by giving them the necessary material and financial supports needed for massive production of food items.
In a statement signed by the chairman of the association, Mrs Arebi Waritimi, and Renner Adejo, secretary respectively, the women group decried a situation where women in the state traveled to far away north to buy ordinary pepper, tomatoes and okro which are perishable items that could have been produced in the state.
The group noted with regret that the “state is yet to meet the demands of the populace in terms of food supply and have continued to rely on supply of food items from neigbouring states as well as states in the north”.
This is happening because, there is absence of large scale subsistence farming in the state hence the dependence of supplies from outside.
According to the women, after buying those items, they face the difficulties of transporting them back to Bayelsa State at very high cost which make them incur huge losses.
They said, giving the opportunity the food items could be produce in the state and made available to the people at very cheap rate.
The group, therefore appealed to the State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva to assist them interms of providing soft loans, vehicles and speed boats to enable them effectively tackle the problems.
