Bayelsa Fixes Council Poll For April 2010
Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) has fixed April 3, 2010 as the date for the conduct of local Government Election in eight constitutionally recognised councils of the state.
The councils had been without elected chairmen and councillors for the past three years of Chief Timipre Sylva’s administration.
Apart from non release of fund by the State Government to organise council elections, the opposition parties, had also gone to court to challenge the composition of BSIEC members which they said were all card carrying members of the ruling peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Briefing newsmen last weekend, the chairman of BSIEC, Chief Akpoabode Yingomone said the commission will meet the 13 visible political parties and other stakeholders this week to collect guidelines for the conduct of the polls.
He said the suit challenging their membership of the commission has been withdrawn, and the matter struck out, saying that non-of them is a card carrying member of any political party.
The chairman, however lamented that out of N900 million applied for the State government only approved N225 million which is inadequate for conducting the election.
Chief Yingomone said the commission hopes to dialogue with the state government in this regard, assuring political parties that the election would be free and fair.
According to him, security would be beefed up around the local government council headquarters during the elections to avoid breakdown of law and order and applied to Bayelsan for support and co-operation within the period of the election.
