RSU Matriculates 7,337 Fresh Students
The Rivers State University, Port Harcourt on Wednesday, matriculated 7,337 students who recently gained admission into the university.
The matriculation ceremony, which featured academic processions attracted people from all walks of life to the campus in Nkpolu-Oroworukwu, Port Harcourt, as the entire campus was jampacked with parents, friends and well wishers of the matriculants. The university’s security personnel had a hectic time controlling the avalanche of vehicles that stormed the campus, as it witnessed unprecedented traffic gridlock.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Nlerum Okogbule while addressing the crowd at the event announced that the university is now ranked the 5th best university in the country, and urged the matriculating students to consider themselves lucky to be admitted to the institution.
Pro Okogbule also hinted that the management of the university has extended the period for fresh students who had not concluded their registration processes and payment of fees to Friday, July 23, 2021 to enable them conclude the exercise and formalise their studentship of the university.
To this end, the university declared Thursday 15th and Friday, 16th July, lecture-free days for all Year 1 students.
According to him, as from Monday, July 16, 2021, any candidate who fails to utilise this opportunity will not be countenanced as a student of the university.
The Vice Chancellor advised the students to cultivate the habit of hard work and unwavering focus on their academic assignments by taking their studies seriously and not wasting their valuable time on unproductive ventures and activities, stressing that the university has zero tolerance for all forms of anti-social activities such as membership of secret cult groups and examination malpractices.
“The penalty for involvement in any of these activities is rustication from the university and I do not waste time in doing this once a student is found culpable,” he said, adding that the Students Affairs Directorate has a list of registered and acceptable clubs students can belong to in the university to assist them engage in extra-curricular activities on campus.
In order to encourage academic excellence, Prof Okogbule said the university will be declaring as University Schoars those who attain a CGPA of 5.00 at the end of every academic session and that the university will be responsible for the school fees of such students provided their CGPA do not fall below 4.50, contending that upon graduation, such students would be given preference when employment opportunities are available.
The Vice Chancellor thanked the visitor of the university and Governor of the State, Chief Nyesom Wike for the trust and confidence he has reposed in the management and council of the university leading to the positive transformation of the institution. He noted with delight recent commissioning of the Senate building of the university and the NURSS building and the ongoing construction of the new campuses of the university, which he said are eloquent testimonies of the love the Governor has for the university.
