Policeman Leads Kidnap Gang Arrested In Calabar

A serving policeman and five others have reportedly been arrested in connection with the recent spate of kidnappings in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
It was gathered that the policeman, whose identity was not disclosed, was picked up by ‘Operation Skolombo’ anti-crime squad in the metropolis after at least five kidnap suspects who were arrested on Sunday allegedly implicated him.
Sources said the suspects’ disclosure led to the arrest of the policeman.
The suspects and the policeman, who is said to own some properties, are being held at Eburutu Barracks in Calabar.
When contacted about the reported arrest of the policeman and other suspects in connection with the recent kidnappings, the state Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo said, “I am not aware. For now, I have not heard anything about that. I have to find out.”
She, however, admitted last week that there were cases of kidnappings.
Meanwhile, Maurice Archibong, the Nigerian Chronicle account staff who was kidnapped last week has regained his freedom.
Sources said he was freed after an undisclosed sum of money was paid as ransom.
His abductors had demanded N1.5m as ransom.
Kidnappers of Associate Professor at the University of Calabar Institute of Policy and Public Administration, David Ugwu, have not released him.
He was abducted last week from his home and the kidnappers have demanded N15m as ransom.
