Komkom Pipeline Explosion: NOSDRA Rules Out Payment Of Compensation
The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has ruled out compensation for victims of pipeline explosion in Komkom Community, Oyibo Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The Tide reports that there was calls for compensation to assuage the families of affected persons.
But the Zonal Director of NOSDRA in Port Harcourt, Cyrus Nkangwung while speaking with newsmen said the joint investigation into the explosion which reportedly claimed about 40 lives, showed that the incident was an act of sabotage.
”The cause of the spill is sabotage. When a spill is sabotaged there are no compensation paid. Of course the company can make a provision for relief materials for some people that were affected very grossly.
”But that is not statutory is not legal. The legal thing is that when a spill is as a result of sabotage, you can only get relief materials, and some other palliatives. But it is not that they will get compensation.
”So our main concern is that let the environment be restored to normalcy,” he stated, adding that measures will be put in place to begin clean-up exercise at the site of the explosion.
The NOSDRA boss further said, “The Company had come to do scooping alongside my staff (NOSDRA operatives). Scooping is just to know the level of work to be done.
”It is passing through some processes in the company to enable us come up with the cost of the contract, and then we will call the contractors to bid for them.
“So, that is the stage it is now. When that is done, then they will come to start work. What we will do thereafter is to ensure that the work is done according to the scooping standard.
”We will monitor the clean-up from the beginning to the end, and at the end we will take sample to satisfy that the place is okay scientifically,” Nkangwung explained.
It will be recalled that pipeline explosion occurred in Komkom community, Oyigbo LGA in the early hours of Saturday June, 22, 2019.
