Onne Port Evacuates Two Ship Wreckages
In a bid to make the waterways safe for vessels and cargoes for navigation, the management of Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), Onne Port has evacuated two ship wreckages abandoned in its waterways to enhance free navigation by ship owners to the port complex.
Port Manager, Onne Port, Alhasan Ismaila Abubakar, disclosed this to The Tide shortly after a media parley with journalists in his office, last Friday.
Abubakar, who described ship wreckage as a serious challenge to the management and vessel owners said, the abandoned wreck hinders free flow of vessel to the port, thereby lowering its revenue.
The Manager said the removal of the two ship wreckages would enhance productivity, reduce water accident and make the route safe for vessel owners.
Describing the removal of the wreckage as one of its achievements in 2018, Abubakar said the Onne Port has also established a Safe Anchorage Area (SAA) to improve its port activities and enhance productivity.
Describing the port as the most friendly to its users, the manager said the management would continue to maintain cordial relationship with its three terminal operators, the Brawal, Intel and the West African Container Terminals in the Onne Port complex to improve its productivity.
He explained that the on- going Federal Government structural reforms on the nation’s ports would increase port activities across the country as well as improve revenue generation to the nation.
As one of its major achievements, Abubakar said the port has implemented the executive order on Ease of Doing Business, noting that the order will improve port productivity and better efficiency.
The manager said Onne Port has commenced the OIS /indorama operations and the Federal Government Fertilizer Blending Project at the Federal Ocean Terminal FOT complex.
He also told The Tide that the Port has commenced the RoRo operations and its Port expansion and Standardisation of projects.
Ismaila Abubakar said in 2018, Onne Port has implemented customers price index adjustment on rates, saying that it would significantly increase it fees.
While decrying the spate of pirate attacks on vessels coming to the ports, Abubakar called on federal government to deployed the services of the Nigerian Navy to reduce the incident of frequent attacks on ships and crew members to Onne Port.

Sugar Tax ‘ll Threaten Manufacturing Sector, Says CPPE
In a statement, the Chief Executive Officer, CPPE, Muda Yusuf, said while public health concerns such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases deserve attention, imposing an additional sugar-specific tax was economically risky and poorly suited to Nigeria’s current realities of high inflation, weak consumer purchasing power and rising production costs.
According to him, manufacturers in the non-alcoholic beverage segment are already facing heavy fiscal and cost pressures.
“The proposition of a sugar-specific tax is misplaced, economically risky, and weakly supported by empirical evidence, especially when viewed against Nigeria’s prevailing structural and macroeconomic realities.
The CPPE boss noted that retail prices of many non-alcoholic beverages have risen by about 50 per cent over the past two years, even without the introduction of new taxes, further squeezing consumers.
Yusuf further expressed reservation on the effectiveness of sugar taxes in addressing the root causes of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.
