Workers Threaten Strike In Kano Over Salary Deduction
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and two other unions in Kano State have threatened warning strike over alleged persistent deduction of workers’ salary.
The NLC Chairman in Kano, Kabiru Minjibir disclosed this to newsmen yesterday after a meeting with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Public Service Negotiations Council (JPSNC).
Minjibir said the consultants who were assigned the handling of salary issues in the state had been deducting workers’ salary without justification, thereby causing them unnecessary hardship.
“The intended warning strike is due to the protracted inconsistencies in the payment of monthly salaries to workers by the so-called consultants engaged by government.
“We noted with serious concern the unauthorised deduction of undefined amount of over N367.50 from workers’ monthly salaries and N168.00 from pensioners for undisclosed reasons.
“The government must suspend the use of consultants on salary issues latest by May 2018 and hand it over to qualified and experienced civil servants,’’ he said.
Minjibir said the unions also faulted the non-implementation of the annual salary increment of workers as well as delay in promotion of the state civil servants, Local Governments and SUBEB workers.
The NLC Chairman said the unions resolved that government should put on hold the proposed deduction of monthly premium to Contributory Health Care Scheme due in February 2018.
He said the deduction should be put on hold until all issues of salary, documentation and access to healthcare services were completely resolved.
Minjibir also urged the government to respect its resolve to pay salary, pension on or before 25th of every month
He said the labour unions would have no option than to “embark on a three-day warning strike after March 5”, if the issues raised were not addressed.

HYPREP Tightens Security At Project Sites
Following the rupture of the ground tank of its water facility in Ebubu Community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has tightened security across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
HYPREP, which dropped this hint in a statement signed by its Head of Communications, Dr Enuolare Mba-Nwigoh, said the Project Coordinator, Prof Nenibarini Zabbey had given the directive for security to be tightened across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
Mba-Nwigoh noted that the tightening of security across the project sites has become necessary to forestall interference with the facilities.
He further disclosed that following the rupture of the ground tank of the Ebubu water facility, a team led by HYPREP’s Director of Technical Services, Prof Damian-Paul Aguiyi has visited the scene of the incident to assess the situation, stressing that the water facility has been cordoned off for public safety.
The statement indicated that following the incident, HYPREP has henceforth barred non-project personnel and non-facility staff from gaining access into any of its active project sites in Ogoniland without authorisation.
While appealing to residents of Ebubu Community and the public to remain calm, the Head of Communications assured them that the Project is taking prompt steps to restore water to the community, saying, the cause of the unfortunate incident is being investigated.
He equally noted that the Chief Security Officer of HYPREP has been directed to immediately tighten security across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
The statement said HYPREP is deeply concerned about the incident, stressing that despite the setback, the Project reiterates its commitment to delivering sustainable cleanup in Ogoniland.
