New Port Manager Assumes Duty At Onne
A new Port Manager
for Onne Port, Rivers State, Alhaji Alhassan Ismaila Abubakar, has assumed duty.
A statement by the Onne Port Complex Public Affairs Officers, Mrs Barbara Nchey-Achukwu said until his new posting, Abubakar was the Principal Manager, Traffic in-charge of Calabar Port.
It stated that the new Onne Port Manager took over from Mr Durowaiye Ayodele, who was transferred to Western Ports headquarters in Lagos.
The statement further stated that the posting were as a result of minor reshuffles at the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) at the Lagos headquarters.
Meanwhile, at a brief handover ceremony held at the Port Complex, the outgone Port Manager, Durowaiye Ayodele thanked various Heads of Department for their dedication to duty and loyalty during his tenure, and enjoined all to extend the same hand of fellowship and co-operation to his successor for the Port to achieve its objectives.
He noted that the Port was strategically located for generation of revenue for NPA, as it is not only an Oil and Gas Port, pointing out that it has two major operational areas which include the Federal Ocean Terminal ((FOT) and the Federal Lighter Terminal (FLT), with the three concessionaires of Intels, Brawal Oil Services and West Africa Container Terminal (WACT).
Responding, the new Port Manager, Alhaji Abubakar also solicited the co-operation of all the departmental heads and other stakeholders to attain the good of Onne Port Management, adding that, “let me state that working with you is going to be very pleasant because my success is your success”.
Abubakar said, “let us all help to block all revenue leakages. We should be innovative and committed to our work”, and reiterated the need to work as a team, share information as nobody has monopoly of knowledge in order to achieve set target, while describing the new Managing Director of NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman as a 21st Century worker who is committed to her work and very passionate about efficiency and revenue generation.
Speaking on behalf of the HODs, the Chief Medical Officer of the Port, Dr GoodLuck Okpara assured of good working relationship with the new Port Manager.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
