Elections Provide Incentives For Insecurity – INEC
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahamood Yakubu, has lamented the effect of elections on the overall development of the country.
Yakubu gave his views at the opening ceremony of the 30th annual conference of the Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA), at the University of Port Harcourt, Choba, on Monday.
INEC boss, who was represented by Prof. Anthonia Simbine, a Commissioner in the commission, decried the recent recurrent repetition of elections in the country, noting that the development not only diminishes human capital but also constitutes a drain on the already depleted resources of the federal Government that could have been channeled elsewhere to address other critical needs.
According to Yakubu, “elections in the country have provided incentives for conflict, insecurity and ultimate underdevelopment”, stressing that “situations where elections have had to be repeated (and repeated), certainly do not augur well for savings for the purposes of socio-economic welfare improvement”.
The Chief Electoral Officer in the country emphasized that even though election is by nature adversarial, it could also be “a conflict mitigation and management mechanism that enhances opportunities by creating increased access to development”, and therefore urged the conference to come up with policy recommendations on how elections could be better organised and executed in an atmosphere of peace and security.
“Elections confer legitimacy on governments and serve as means of preventing people from using violent means to change the leadership of government”, he said.
The INEC Chairman underlined the fact that “Elections empower ordinary citizens to choose among contestants for political offices, encourage participation in governance and make it possible for the people to demand accountability from those who govern”.
He noted that, “if and when the choice of the electorate win elections, they will feel more compelled and responsible to those who voted them into office, but where this is not the case, those elected will have no responsibility towards the people that they are supposed to serve”.
