Ogoni Lawyers Forum, an
umbrella body of all Ogoni lawyers in Rivers State, has demanded for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the loss of lives and destruction of property in Yeghe and Bori communities on the 22nd and 23rd of February, 2016 with a view to bringing those responsible for the mayhem to justice.
This was part of a six point resolution reached at the end of an extra-ordinary general meeting of Ogoni lawyers held at the State High Court premises, Port Harcourt, last Monday and signed by its chairman, Barry N Kumbe (Esq).
The group further condemned all forms, manner of extra-judicial killings and destruction of property in Ogoni by anybody whosoever as well as all forms of armed robbery, kidnapping, militancy, thuggery, communal crisis including their sponsors and beneficiaries of these vices.
The group also condemned all forms of inciting statements made by anybody or groups of persons since the incidents which according to them, have further polarised the people and engendered insecurity in Ogoniland.
Ogoni lawyers forum while sympathising with all those who lost their loved ones and property in the unfortunate incident urged government at all levels to live up to its responsibility of protecting lives and property across Ogoni communities.
