Ki-Moon Arrives To Mark UN Bombing, Chibok Girls …Meets Buhari, Today

United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon arrived Nigeria, yesterday, to commemorate the bombing of UN’s headquarters by Islamist sect, Boko Haram and also to focus new attention on over 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in Chibok, Borno State by the ruthless extremists.
Ki-moon will meet with President Muhammadu Buhari, today, amid plans to launch a long-delayed regional offensive against the Islamic insurgents who have since pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
A UN statement says the leaders will discuss ways to counter violent extremism as well as human rights and climate change.
Ban also will meet the Bring Back Our Girls group, which demands government action to free 219 abducted schoolgirls held now for nearly 500 days.
According to the itinerary, Ban will lay a wreath to mark the anniversary of the August 26, 2011, suicide car bombing that killed 21 people at the UN Nigeria headquarters in Abuja.
Shortly after arrival yesterday, the UN secretary general began the series of meetings for which he came to Nigeria, including a meeting with state governors.
The theme of the dialogue with the governors focused on “Pathways to a New Nigeria – The Role of Sub-national Governments.”
Ban was also billed to have lunch with members of the business community, with the conversation focusing on: “The role of Nigeria business and the economy in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing climate change”.
The UN chief, according to the schedule, will take part in series of activities, including a visit to immunisation centres and a dialogue on democracy, human rights, and countering violent extremism, before departing Nigeria, later today.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
