Labour House To Take Off Before May 29 – RSG …As Itubo Emerges New Rivers NLC Boss
The Rivers State government says the state secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) will take off before the expiration of its tenure.
The state governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi disclosed this while declaring open the 11th quadrennial delegates congress of the congress in Port Harcourt.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the state Government, Mr George Feyii, stressed the need for mutual understanding between workers and their employers in the overall interest of the society.
He said that the state government, within the last eight years, had addressed various issues that bother on workers’ welfare, and urged them to elect those that can move the congress forward.
Also speaking, the outgoing chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Chris Oruge, said that the occasion marked the beginning of a new phase in the union.
Oruge also used the occasion to thank Rivers workers for their cooporation and support, and urged them to extend same to the incoming executive.
Meanwhile chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, in the state, Comrade Beatrice Itubo has been elected the new Rivers State chairman of the NLC
Mrs Itubo, who was until here election, the state treasurer of the congress polled a total of 1,035 votes to beat her closest rival, Mr Henry Urombo of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPTRE) who polled 74 votes
Speaking shortly after her inauguration, the new chairman, Mrs Beatrice Itubo said that the interest of workers in the state would be given utmost priority in the scheme of things.
She said that the executive would work hard to ensure that workers’ welfare was not trampled upon.
Other elected members are; Odoemene Jospeh, Chuku Emecheta, first and second vice chairman, respectively while Regina Kuru was elected treasurer.
The rest are; Awoshi Eze, auditor 1 Chuks Boms, auditor II; O. T. Lilly-West, ex-officio; and Franklin Ariolur, also ex-officio.
