Don Blames Terrorism On Bad Governance
Professor Henry Alapiki of
the Department of Political and Administration Studies, University of Port Harcourt has attributed the emergence and growth of terrorism to corrupt and bad governance.
The university don stated this at an inaugural lecture titled, “The State and the Culture of Terrorism in Nigeria: “Unveiling the Real Terrorism,” which was held at the University of Port Harcourt, recently.
According to him, the strategy employed by the Federal Government would only produce an immediate solution which is to deny terrorists and militants the geo-political space to operate and make it difficult for them to find a foothold among the people, but will not present the emergence of future terrorists.
“The state can win the war against terrorism. But it will be a pyrrhic victory if it does not win the war against corruption.”
He said that in order to prevent the emergence of future terrorists, the ideological war must be won, which must be anchored on the existential realities of the people, especially the younger generation.
The society should be carried along beginning with the restoration of good family value, respect for moral standards in public conduct, obedience to the rule of law and restoring the standard of reduction throughout the country. These tools should be used to win the ideological war.”
The greater danger confronting the world comes from failed states which create the fertile grounds for the emergence and growth of terrorism. The major features of such states are corruption and bad governance,” he added.
Also speaking, Prof Victory Uchechukwu Dienye called on the youths to shun violence and stick to the laws of the country.
