The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide and the Rivers State Council of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have described as satanic and wicked, the continous kidnapping of medical doctors in the state,
The organizations, which said this at a protest in Port Harcourt, said that, the situation had created an emotional and psychological effect on doctors in the state.
The Secretary General of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Engr. Emmanuel Bristol Alagbariya, condemned the situation, stressing that a situation where Doctors now cover their faces while going to work, was not in the interest of the society.
Alagbariya said that the incidence, if not checked, could have negative consequences for the society as there would be no doctors to treat those requiring medical attention.
He said that the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) , in conjunction with other groups, were embarking on the protest, to say “enough” of the kidnapping of Doctors in the state.
Also speaking, the state Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Furo Green, expressed concern why kidnappers were now going after Medical Doctors against the background of their humanitarian services to the society.
Green, who decried the situation, said that those involved in the act must have a rethink as their actions could have negative health implications for the society.
The Chief Medical Director of the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Okikere Nicholas Iragunima, said that the board was deeply concerned over the incident.
Iragunima called on those involved in the act to desist in the interest of the state.
The protest, which started from the GRA Junction, Port Harcourt, terminated at the office of the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board.
