A’Ibom: Ex-PDP Publicity Scribe To Run For Guber
With an intimidating
campaign train that shocked the people of Akwa Ibom State, a one-time National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Benjamin Okoko, at the weekend joined the list of those aspiring for the exalted office of the governor in the state.
Okoko, who had aspired to be the governor of the state in 1999, 2003 and 2007 but was reportedly compelled to withdraw from the race because of the party interest and zoning, surprised the people of the state again as he made triumphant entry into the state with long campaign followers.
The PDP governorship hopeful, who arrived the Akwa Ibom International Airport in a chartered flight, caused a stir at the airport as the crowd that had thronged the airport to receive him went on wild jubilation.
From the airport to the Willington Bassey Way leading to the government house a journey of about 30 kilometres where a mass and thanksgiving service was specifically held for him at the Christ the King Cathedral, the people stood still as his convoy drove pass.
Favoured by the zoning arrangement of the governorship ticket to Eket Senatorial district, the Ikot Abasi local government born politician also formally declared open his three-story building campaign office along Edet Akpan Avenue.
Speaking with newsmen in an interview, Okoko said he was running the race not because of zoning but on his experience, credential, merit and pedigree and fully out to defeat anybody whether from Uyo or Ikot Ekpene senatorial districts coming to challenge him.
Okoko said he was not bothered by the plot of the incumbent governor of the state to produce a successor, saying it was unfair to expect a politician not to have interest in politics.
Speaking on insecurity and insurgency, Okoko said it was wrong for Nigerians to blame politicians, saying politicians in the country remained decent and would not deliberately create insurgency and insecurity in order to win elections.
