Ebola: NULGE Sensitises LG Workers
The National Union of Lo
cal Government Employees (NULGE), Rivers State Chapter has concluded plans to tour the 23 Local Government Areas of the state to sensitise its members of the dreaded killer disease – Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), with effect from first week of September.
The sensitisation tour which was initially scheduled to commence last Thursday, August 21 was interrupted by the sudden death of the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Port Harcourt City Local Government, Hon. Charles Paul as the Union is actively involved in the burial arrangements.
Dropping this hint in an interview with The Tide yesterday in Port Harcourt, NULGE State President, Barr. Franklin Ajinwo lamented the outbreak of the Ebola virus disease, which has already claimed five lives in the country and applauded the efforts of the World Health Organization (WHO), federal and Rivers State governments in tackling the scourge.
Barr. Ajinwo said, “The issue of Ebola is rather a global problem. The global community has taken steps to enlighten people; the federal government is enlightening people; the Rivers State government has done that. And we, at the Local Government level – if not for the death of the Chairman of PHALGA, we should have embarked on the tour of our branches on the 21st of this month and use the opportunity to sensitise our members on the outbreak of the Ebola Virus disease. They have to be careful”.
“We have written a letter re-scheduling it. First week of September – after the burial of the Chairman (of PHALGA), we shall embark on the tour —”, he said, adding that, aside the Local Government workers, everybody should be cautious of Ebola and exercise restraint in their life style.
“Ebola Virus is a killer virus, our people should play safe”, he advised.
Barr. Ajinwo also decried the recent violence that erupted in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state and advised politicians to play according to the rules and eschew violence as the count-down to 2015 general elections begins, in order to save the state from blood-bath and wanton destruction of lives and properties.
“We just pray and advise that they should play politics with maturity so that the people they hope to govern (in 2015) will be alive for them to come and rule”, he said.
