Clergyman Canvasses Referendum For Confab Report
A clergyman, Rev.
Chimaobi Emelogu, has called on the Federal Government to institute a process that would subject resolutions of the ongoing National Conference to a referendum.
Emelogu, who is the Chairman of the Conference of the United Evangelical Church, formerly known as Qua Iboe Church, said in Calabar, last Thursday, during a meeting of the Church’s National Standing Committee.
He said that subjecting the outcome of the national conference to a referendum would make it to reflect the general opinion of Nigerians and urged delegates to the conference to make suggestions that would make Nigeria stronger and able to tackle its many challenges.
Emelogu condemned the activities of terrorists, saying that the church had been praying for more peace and religious tolerance in Nigeria.
He noted that activities of insurgents had brought hardship on many Nigerian families.
“We are joining all well-meaning Nigerians to condemn the activities of the Boko Haram sect. “We totally condemn the killing of many Nigerian students on their way to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, the bombing of the Nyanya Motor Park in Abuja and abduction of school girls in Chibok,” he said.
“We commend the efforts of the Federal Government and the international community toward the release of the school girls. “The church appreciates the love and concern of the international community for Nigeria, and calls on all Nigerians to fervently pray for God’s intervention. “The church calls on politicians in Nigeria to have the fear of God,’’ he added.
He urged that Nigerian leaders should ask for wisdom from God in the discharge of their duties.
