936 Teachers Appeal For Reinstatement In Edo
The 936 disengaged Edo
State teachers last Monday appealed to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, for reinstatement. The teachers made the appeal when they protested to the Edo State House of Assembly in Benin.
A teacher, who led the protesters to the assembly, Mr Osaigede Omoruyi, said the disengagement had brought untold hardship to their families.
“During the screening exercise, the governor promised that he was not going to witch-hunt any teacher. “The screening was done in other ministries and the same problem discovered was addressed and nobody was sacked. “Those who reduced their age in other ministries have been made to write their actual age, without removing their names from the pay roll. “We do not know why they are treating us like this,” he said.
According to Omoruyi, “we are appealing to the governor to reinstate us so that we can take care of our families.
The Speaker, Uyi Igbe, told the teachers to send their petition to the House, adding that the issue would be addressed if they had a genuine case.
Igbe urged them to go about the protest peacefully.
Meanwhile, the House has called on President Goodluck Jonathan, to urgently appoint a commissioner to represent Edo on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Moving the motion under matters of urgent public importance, Mrs Elizabeth Ativie, said Edo was the only state without a commissioner on the board of the NDDC.
She said, “several NDDC projects started by the former commissioner have been abandoned. Contractors have not been paid.
According to her, Edo has been denied their rights and subjected to untold hardship.
