RVHA Reiterates Support For Waste Mgt Agency
The Rivers State House
of Assembly has assured the Waste Management Agency of the necessary legislative backing to enable it discharge its duties.
The House Committee Chairperson on Environment, Hon Victoria Nyeche who stated this when the committee undertook tour of the agency as part of its oversight function said the Assembly would always give the necessary support needed to deliver a better service to the people in terms of better environment.
According to her, “it is not all about cleanliness, but the health of the people of Rivers state. We are concerned about with the health of our people and the environment”.
She explained that the Waste Management Agency which took over from the Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Agency in view of the bill recently passed by the House would improve on service delivery in the state.
The House Committee Chairperson expressed satisfaction with the work the management had done to keep the state clean, saying that the House has passed the bill, it is left for the executive and the agency to implement the law and meet the aspiration of the people.
The lawmaker called on investors to partner with the agency to delvier on its mandate stressing “there is market for waste management.”
Earlier, the sole administrator of the Rivers State Environmental Authority, Mr Ade Adengun said he met an organisation that lacked focus and was involved in revenue collections, pointing out that the current management had done a lot to improve and motivate workers and also deliver a better services to the people.
He lamented the absence of a maintenance workshop which had hampered its operations.
‘’ If our trucks are bad, we need to fly in an engineers from Lagos, so we are working on how to train some of our personnel. This is why we are involve in training and re-training of workers. The attitudes of workers have change and they are ready to work because of the motivation ’’,he said
Adengun informed that the agency was able to provide internal roads to the dump sites, management and operational vehicles, two DOMAG trucks at dump sites, to enhance service delivery.
The Committee members visited the premises of the aency, the dump sites at Rumuorlumini and Eliozu.
