Violence Can’t Subdue Our Spirit, Abe Assures Ogonis
The Senator, representing Rivers South-East in the National Assembly, Magnus Abe has described the massive turnout of Khana people for the inauguration of the local government chapter of Save Rivers Movement (SRM) in Bori last Saturday, as a vindication of the fact that violence cannot subdue the spirit of a free people.
Senator Abe, who monitored the inauguration and rally from London, noted that the successful hosting of the event in the face of threats and intimidation was a confirmation that the principle of non-violence with which Ogoni heroes fought the then federal military government and multinational corporations was still the best weapon.
He praised Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi for his courage and exemplary commitment to Ogoni course, saying “the governor was ready to take the first bullet for Ogoni. His courage, doggedness and commitment to truth continue to justify the decision of true Rivers people to stand with him in the defense of our state.”
The chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) lauded genuine political leaders, traditional rulers, men, women and youths for their sacrifice and commitment to the course of Rivers people, in this season of unbelievable oppression.
Abe stated that the peace experienced during last Saturday’s event had further exposed architects of violence in the state.
“From this experience, we now know that without political interference, the Nigeria Police Force remains a professional force that can secure and safeguard the freedom of Nigerians”, he declared.
While emphasizing the need to remain vigilant in the months ahead, the Senator, urged Rivers people to resist attempts at thwarting democratic tenets and support variables that guarantee freedom in decision-making.
