The Nigeria Police yesterday dispatched Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit, Dog Sniffing unit and the C41 unit to carry out thorough security inspection and sweeping of the entire premises of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The thorough security inspection was in preparation for resumption of legislative duties of the lawmakers.
The Tide gathered that as early as 7.am yesterday, some foreign experts were seen checking round the premises of the complex.
The Rivers State Police Command had last week said it would not allow lawmakers into the premises except they got a copy of the judgment.
According to him, ”Even after going through the judgement, the police will screen the whole offices and complex to ensure that no weapon and bomb are hidden anywhere near the premises”.
In a press statement by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP John O Amadi, invited all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to report to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, incharge of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) where each member of the House would sign an undertaking that they will conduct themselves in an orderly manner when they resume sitting.
In response to the police response, the Deputy Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly,Hon Leyii Kwanee, said they would consult their lawyers for briefing before honouring the police request.
According to him, “We shall get brief from our team of lawyers before going to the Police to sign any undertaking.
It would be recalled that an Abuja High Court sitting in Abuja and presided by Hon Justice Ahmed Mohammed ruled last Wednesday, December 11, 2013 that the Rivers State House of Assembly should resume sitting.
But ever since the ruling, the lawmakers supporting Governor Chibuike Amaechi have been wanting to commence sitting but the police had refused them entry due to the security implications.
