Aide Extols Akhigbe’s Qualities
The Personal Assistant to
the late Chief of General Staff, Admiral Mike Okhai Akhigbe (rtd.), Lt Commander Koka Imananagha (rtd.), has described the demise of his former principal as very painful.
Speaking during an interview with newsmen at Fugar, Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State shortly after Akhigbe’s interment, Imananagba said the late Chief of General Staff touched his life and many who came in contact with him while alive.
According to him, “Although I retired from service prematurely in 1997, whatever I have today was the handiwork of my late boss as he had a unique way of touching people’s lives.
Narrating his last encounter with the late Akhigbe, the former ADC said, “I packed my master’s things as he was travelling to the United States of America for treatment, not knowing it would be the last time to see him. He asked me during his last visit home to keep few things as he would come back to use them, but I never knew that would be my last time of seeing him. He bade me good bye, saying he was a sick man”.
Also speaking in another interview, a constitutional lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, described the late Mike Okhai Akhigbe as a man whose legacy would always be remembered and a zealous military officer who fought for the proscription of the anti-labour laws that gave Adams Oshiomhole and others the leverage of becoming labour leaders in the country.
Said he; “The late Mike Akhigbe had touched the lives of a lot of people even as he was vice to General Abdulsalami Abubakar. He was a zealous military officer who took a lot of steps to ensure the proscription of anti-labour laws which gave the likes of Adams Oshiomhole the opportunity to become labour leaders and served”.
He added; “Akhigbe also in record time helped to midwife the present democracy we are enjoying. He lived for 67 eventful years that transformed the landscape of Nigeria and his death is not painful to only Etsako people but the entire nation”.
