Mark Unveils Africa Legislative Summit Logo
The Senate President, David Mark, on Thursday in Abuja unveiled the logo for the first ever Legislative Summit to be held in Africa.
The summit is being hosted by the National Assembly and anchored by the National Institute for Legislative Studies (NILS) with the theme: “Emerging Legislatures in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges”.
Mark, while unveiling the logo said that members of parliament needed to strategically place themselves in positions that would enable them to become effective leaders, hence the need for the summit.
He said parliamentarians needed to retool themselves to drive the process of good governance and effective representation.
“Members of parliament need to develop confidence and a sense of commonality across the Africa region. MPs need to define Africa’s interests and realise those interest within the global communities,” he said.
According Mark, the Africa legislative summit is therefore being instituted as a medium for legislators and stakeholders to achieve all the stated goals.
“It is my hope and aspiration that the summit becomes an influential and effective institution in African and global politics.
“We should do all we can to ensure that the summit becomes sustainable, “Mark said.
Speaking earlier, the President of the summit, Sen. Victor Ndoma- Egba, said that the summit would provide an avenue for African parliamentarians to interact and share ideas and experiences on democracies and economies.
Ndoma-Egba said that the summit would among other things address voters’ expectations and the reality of parliamentary representation and overcoming the limits of legislative oversight.
He said it would also touch on the issue of processing of legislations, political parties and legislative autonomy, modernising the operations of parliaments and the role of parliaments in enhancing regional integration.
According to him, the advantages for Nigeria as a host country are numerous as the summit placed the country in the forefront of efforts to consolidate democracy on the continent.
Those expected to attend the summit apart from parliamentarians are the presidents of Kenya, Mr Uhuru Kenyatta and his Liberian counterpart Ellen Johnson SirLeaf, as well as other heads of state.
Our correspondent reports that the logo of the summit depicts the Map of Africa showing flags of all the countries and the mace which is the symbol of the legislature.
The summit will hold from November 10 to 13.
