Bayelsa Ministries Bicker Over Land Compensation
The ministries of Educa
tion and Land and Survey in Bayelsa State are now trading blames over the non-payment of compensation for land acquired to build a model secondary school in Kaiama.
The state government had acquired the land at Kaiama in the Kolokumo/Opokumo local government area to build the school.
This acquisition was done by the state government under the Land Use Act No. 6 of 1978. It had on Jan. 9 then gone on to revoke the Rights of Occupancy existing on all parcels of land marked out in various LGAs in the state for development purposes.
But Salo Adikumo, the state’s Commissioner for Education, told NAN in Yenagoa on Monday that it was the duty of the Ministry of Land and Survey to pay compensation.
“It is not the duty of the Ministry of Education to pay for land acquired for government projects,’’ he said.
Investigation at the Bayelsa Ministry of Land and Survey showed that the ministry had however concluded assessment and verification of the title documents tendered by the property owners.
But a source at the ministry, who preferred anonymity, said while the plight of the property owners was regrettable the ministry had no budgetary provisions for such compensation.
“It is not in our place to pay them. We have done our bit, and we expect the state government to pick the bill and reduce their sufferings,” the source said.
The Co-ordinator of the land owners association in Kaiama, Mr Alawei Basuo, said the delay in the compensation process had taken a negative toll on them.
