Amaechi Street Cup Moves To Diobu
The Port Harcourt Street Soccer competition tagged Amaechi Cup is set to commence soon and will now be held among football clubs in Diobu areas of Port Harcourt City.
According to the Commissioner for Sports, Rivers State, Hon Fred Igwe in a statement signed by the press officer to the Ministry of Sports in the states, Julie ,Masi, arrangements have been concluded to stage a successful second edition of the competition.
The statement which was made available to Tidesports yesterday urged teams within the Diobu axis to start preparation towards registration and competition proper.
Hon Igwe disclosed that the state governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi has approved necessary logistics to host the competition, especially, afte the maiden edition, which was held in the old Port Harcourt Township axis was a huge success.
‘The 20132 edition played at the No.1 field in the Old Township produced many talented footballers who are now playing for different clubs in the Nigerian Professional Football League and the national teams.
“We believe that more budding talents would be discovered from the 2013 competition in Diobu”, he said through the statement.
He reiterated that only players and teams resident in Diobu will be eligible to participate in the forthcoming competition.
It would be recalled that a total of N18million prize money was up for grab during the maiden edition last year and the winner, first and second runners went home with trophies and the sum of N10m, N5m and N3m, respectively.
An overwhelming amount of spectators were on hand to watch youthful players from their neighbourhood display football artistry.
