Rivers Youth Summit Opens ‘Morrow
Rivers State Government is to hold the second youth summit on Tuesday in the state capital after five years, with the aim to check the rising wave of unemployment among Rivers youths.
The Commissioner for Youth Development, Sir Owene E. Wonodi who disclosed this in his office on Friday, said that the goal of the summit was to provide a framework for sustainable multi-sectorial road map to bring to the barest minimum emerging youth development challenges in Rivers State.
Sir Wonodi noted that the main target of the summit was to generate ideas that will metamorphose into massive engagement of the youth for socio-economic transformation of Rivers State.
According to him, the expected result of the summit is to create a common platform to fight the hydra-headed problem of unemployment, poverty and restiveness amongst youths.”
“The strategic thrusts of the second youth summit is knowing corporate social responsibility, Role of Government in Youth Development, Reproductive Health of the youth, Establishment of industrial parks as bedrock for job/wealth creation and ensuring legal framework to actualize summit considerations,” he said.
The commissioner outlined the agenda to include, the rising unemployment among Rivers youth, the effect of idleness and the astronomic rise in crime, illegal oil refining, theft and other anti-social activities of youths.
The youth development boss said the state government and private sectors had a great task on how to empower about 3.5 million active youths of Rivers State, adding that the targeted audience include, organised private sector, the public sector and the youth.
He also disclosed that the Rivers State government was working relentlessly on ways to empower and integrate youths into the mainstream of development, and urged corporate bodies to see the summit as an opportunity to contribute to their operational environment.
