Edo LG Builds Relief Camps Ahead Flooding
The Etsako Central Local Government of Edo says it has constructed temporary relief camps ahead of this year’s predicted flooding.
The council Chairman, Mr Emmanuel Momoh, told newsmen in Fugar that four camps, fitted with modern facilities, had been prepared for those who might be displaced by flood.
Momoh said that the council embarked on massive enlightenment to educate the various communities in the area, especially those within the riverside areas, about actions to take when the need arose.
He said that with the early preparations, the residents would be able to conduct themselves better by knowing when to vacate their homes and move to the camps.
He commended the state government for the measures it took in handling last year’s disaster in the area, adding that the camps were built to provide habitable environment for victims.
“We know the state and the council did their best during last year’s flood disaster even though they were never prepared for it.
“It has been predicted that flooding will occur again in some parts of the country this year and we have to be prepared for it, but nobody actually knows what will happen.
“It may or may not occur as predicted. We really do not want to be caught off guard.
“We have put four camps in place and these camps are fitted with modern toilets and other facilities, including play station, for children,” he said.
Momoh also said the efforts by both the state and the local government was to ensure that the losses suffered by flood victims last year would not reoccur.
“We are not alone on this as the state government is also making its own plans to mitigate suffering of any victim,” he said.
It will be recalled that Etsako Central was affected by the 2012 flood in Edo where more than 10,000 persons were displaced in 10 communities.
Also NIMET has predicted that 32 states are most likely to be affected by flood this year.
