RVHA Advocates Safer Environment …As World Environment Day Winds Up
Chairman of the Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Mrs Victoria Nyeche, has urged Nigerians to imbibe the culture of preserving the country’s natural resources for the benefit of future generations.
Nyeche, who made the call last Wednesday during the 2013 World Environment Day celebration in Port Harcourt noted that preserving resources, especially the food we eat, would make a great impact in our environment”.
According to her, the theme for this year’s celebration tagged ‘Think, Eat and Save”, was a step in the right direction.
On his part, the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nyema Weli noted that the resources could be preserved by each individual agreeing to plant a tree in our environment.
While urging people to reduce wastes during production, processing, distribution and consumption of food in the state, Weli said “we all have roles to play in conserving natural resources, let us learn how to reduce loss and waste of food. Let us join in development of green economy initiative”.
He continued that “one way to achieve this, is to ensure that every member of your family plant and own a tree to protect and improve life in our environment”.
This, he explained, would help to enhance the quality of air we breathe as well as reduce flooding and erosion in the state.
