Director Denies Hijack Of Farmers Registration
The Edo Director of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Wellington Omoragbon, has denied claim by some farmers that politicians had hijacked the farmers registration exercise.
Omoragbon told newsmen in Benin last Tuesday that the exercise was done under the supervision of communities of top officials of both the federal and state ministry of agriculture.
“It is not true that politicians hijacked the registration exercise, the exercise was actually supervised by committees of top officials from both the federal and state governments, with the state commissioner as chairman. “Many people do not understand what we are doing with regards to the farmers’ registration exercise. “The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is creating a data bank of farmers who are estimated to be about 20 million all over the country with a view to providing needed support to boost productivity”, he said.
Omoragbon also debunked insinuations that farmers were paying between N500 and N1,000 to be registered.
He stressed that the registration was free, devoid of any political undertone and a continuous exercise.
The director, however, noted that about 70,000 farmers out of an estimated 120,000 farmers from the 192 wards across the state had been validated.
He urged farmers to visit the various approved redemption centres to redeem their fertilizer and other inputs on the receipt of an SMS alert on their phones.
Omoragbon said that the Federal Government was committed to boosting agricultural productivity through the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) scheme.
