Dickson Tasks FG, Ministry On N’Delta Dev
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has solicited the support of the Federal Government and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to develop the region.
Dickson made the appeal when officials of the Ministry led by its Minister, Mr Godsday Orubebe, visited him at Government House, Yenagoa last week.
He noted that though the region was plagued with development challenges, sustainable progress could only be achieved through mutual understanding and cooperation of the people.
Dickson, who stressed the need for collective responsibility, noted that negative criticism of development of the region was unnecessary.
He commended the Federal Government and the ministry for the pragmatic measures being used to redress the long period of neglect the region had suffered.
Dickson expressed delight at the ongoing efforts to bring all critical stakeholders together with a view to evolve a common development blueprint for the region.
The governor assured of the readiness of the state to participate in the proposed conference.
“I’m very encouraged and impressed with the steps your ministry has taken in very difficult circumstances to ensure that the East-West Road is delivered not just to the people of Niger Delta but to all Nigerians.
“It is commendable because at the end of the day the development of the Niger Delta is a collective dream and duty for all of us. “We should not make it to be like an ‘us and them’ situation,’’ he said.
Earlier, Orubebe said the visit was to inform the governors from the region of a stakeholders conference scheduled to hold in April in Uyo.
He reiterated the ministry’s preparedness to deliver the East-West Road by 2014.
Orubebe, attributed the delay in the completion of the road to the absence of detailed designs and drawings when it was awarded in 2006 by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He called on the Niger Delta people to support the Federal Government, adding: “there is no better period to do that than now”.
