Imo Assembly Begins Deputy Gov’s Impeachment
The Imo State House of Assembly yesterday commenced impeachment processes against the state deputy governor, Sir Jude Agbaso.
Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu said the processes were started after 25 out of 27 members of the House successfully served a notice of impeachment on the deputy governor over allegations that he lied to the House regarding receipt of bribe monies totaling N458 million from a construction company in the state.
In an official communication to the state Chief Judge, Wednesday, the State Assembly, requested the “constitution of a panel to investigate the allegations as contained in the article of misconduct attached to the impeachment notice served on the deputy governor.
The Assembly also accused the deputy governor of negligence and failure to prevent the payment of N1.15 billion to the same construction company for inability to deliver a road project, a works commissioner in the state.
It would be recalled that the Imo State House of Assembly had last Tuesday passed a motion to serve the state Deputy Governor, Mr Jude Agbaso, an impeachment notice through the media.
The motion was moved by Mr Mike Ndubuaku (Orlu-APGA) at the plenary.
The House was resolved to serve him in his office and in his official residence.
Ndubuaku said all efforts made to reach the deputy governor by the Clerk of the House, Mr Chris Duru, to serve him the notice personally had failed.
According to the Assembly, it would be necessary to serve the deputy governor through other ways.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Benjamin Uwajumogu, had earlier directed the clerk to issue an impeachment notice to the deputy governor to appear before the House.
The speaker warned that the House would continue with the impeachment process if the deputy governor refused to honour the notice.
