Delta Community Tasks Govt On Roads
The people of Ewulu, an agrarian community in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, have appealed to the federal and the state governments to provide them with access road.
A former Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources in the state, Mr Jerry Ossai, made the call on behalf of the community at the launch of commercial cassava cultivation programme at Ewulu.
Ossai, a commercial farmer, said the community was ready to allocate land needed by both the federal and the state governments for implementation of government’s agricultural transformation agenda.
He appealed to the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Misan Ukubeyinje, to present the community’s appeal to the relevant authorities.
According to Ossai, if government can open up the area, the agricultural transformation agenda of the government will be realised.
“My farm is in Ishiagwu, a few kilometres from Ewulu, and because of the poor state of the roads, it is difficult to move farm produce to the market.
“On behalf of the people, I plead with the federal and the state governments to come to our aid and provide us with access road.
“Our major challenge is the poor access road to the community; as a community, we have the capacity to give to government as much land they may need for agricultural programmes,’’ he said.
He said the community has river that can serve as a means of transportation for goods and people.
Responding, Ukubeyinje said the state government had intervened in communities with similar challenge by providing roads to link them up.
He also said that the Federal Government, through its Growth Enhancement Scheme Programme, had provision for upgrading and construction of about 500 kilometres of rural roads to link farming communities to markets.
The commissioner assured the people that their request would be considered.
