Basic Education: FG Begins Distribution Of Instructional Materials
President Goodluck Jonathan last Saturday in Uyo, launched the distribution of instructional materials for basic education in Akwa Ibom.
Jonathan, represented by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, said the Federal Government was determined to ensure that every child had access to instructional materials for effective learning.
He said that since the textbooks initiative at basic education level began in 2009, 96,326,675 books in Mathematics, English Language, Basic Science, among others had been procured.
“The supply of textbooks and other instructional materials have been receiving increasing prominence in our basic education delivery approaches.
“This is in line with our determined efforts toward quality intervention in order to achieve acceptable standard of basic education output,’’ the president said.
He said that beyond the FG-UBE textbooks initiative,“ efforts at national transformation will achieve the desired results only if it is predicated at provisions of quality education at all levels.’’
In her speech, the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, stressed that the Transformation Agenda of the Jonathan administration “ provides strategic direction towards achieving the key goals of the government and the nation as a whole.’’
She stated that the goals were aimed at transforming the society for the collective well-being of the citizenry and ensuring global competitiveness.
The minister said that human capital development was necessary for attaining the goals, adding that education was essential toward its actualisation.
Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, said that the best investment any society could bequeath to its citizens was education.
He said secondary and primary school enrolment in the state was 1.7 million, adding that government pays examination fees for students.
“We have paid N46 million for students sitting for National Business and Technical Examinations Board; N463 million for those writing West African Examinations Council and N238 million for logistics to school heads,” he said.
