Association Scores Theatre Arts High On Nation Building
The National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), Akwa Ibom chapter, says its members have succeeded in bringing sanity into the society through their work of arts.
The Chairman of the group, Mr Sunday Umanah, said this while briefing newsmen in Uyo on preparations for the 2013 World Theatre Day celebration coming up in March.
Umanah said that through their efforts in theatre, the practitioners had been able to mirror the society.
He said that the event which would be the 52nd edition to be hosted by Akwa Ibom was first launched in 1961 by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), with the goal of uniting the world of theatre through peace.
He said that with this in mind, the group had been able to promote the sanitisation of the country in many ways.
The chairman said that the programme would be a time for appraisal, evaluation and reflection of NANTAP’s efforts in the country.
“Theatre is for the society. If theatre is existing for theatre people alone, then we would have failed to mirror the society.
“Everything we are doing is to checkmate the society, to affect the system and change the society.
“We are supplying the necessary engineering method for the society, therefore when we talk, we don’t talk about ourselves; we talk about the society.
“We have been actively involved in policy making and regulation.
Umanah said that the members were part of the decision makers in the censor board, and were involved in the implementation and arrangement of national festivals like the National Festival of Arts.
