NIDSUG Faults IAUE Students’ Claims
The National President, Niger Delta Student Union Government, Tonbara Michael Yalah, has faulted claims by students of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, that the authorities of the institution had raised school fees, extended deadline for payment of school fees and increased fees for hostel accommodation without consultation.
Making the national leadership position known during a fact-finding visit to the university at Rumuolumeni, near Port Harcourt following a petition, the NIDSUG president expressed disappointment over the false information, and wondered why IAUE student would complain when others who are paying more were not complaining.
He lauded the acting Vice Chancellor for efforts put in place to make the student comfortable despite inadequate funding, and promised to tell all concerned the true position of things in IAUE as Niger Delta Students Union Government was satisfied with what it has seen on ground.
Reacting to the allegations, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the IAUE, Prof Rosemund Dienye Green-Osahogulu remarked that she is sympathetic towards the plights of students as a mother and stressed that management has never interfered in any student union election and did not even know the students until after their elections, a fact collaborated by the students union government president of IAUE, Mr Samuel Amadi
The Acting Vice Chancellor noted that the university is a teacher training institution charged with the responsibility of producing role models who will impact knowledge to future generation and reiterated that indiscipline would not be tolerated in IAUE.
Prof Rosemund told the team that the students of IAUE are doing great, adding that a student in the French Department who recently won laurels for the university will be given scholarship as a way of encouraging hard work.
On hostel accommodation, the Acting Vice Chancellor pointed out that she met the hostels in deplorable condition and started renovation as soon as she came on board based on funds available, stating that on of the hostels to be renovated is in the 2013 budget which the university is yet to get funds for.
Seven hostels, she noted.
On school fees, Prof Osahogulu admitted that the university reviewed fee but that in doing that, management considered what obtain in other institutions before coming up with the fees.
