Amaechi Reassures On Clamour For True Federalism
Rivers
State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, says his State will continue
to strive for the entrenchment of true federalism across every facet of the
country.
Governor Amaechi said this in Calabar, Cross River
State, during the opening session of the South-South Zonal Public Session on
the Review of the 1999 Constitution organised by the Senate Committee on the
Review of the Constitution.
Represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Governor
Amaechi told the delegates that the State’s position, arrived at during the
one-day public session held in Port Harcourt last Wednesday, had been passed on
to the committee, expressing the confidence that the process of reviewing the
1999 Constitution would yeild positive results.
Earlier, the Senate President, Senator David Mark,
speaking through his deputy, Mr. Efiok Cobhams, stated that the State supports
the constitution review process, stressing states in the country should be
identified and recognized as federating units not appendages and should be
allowed to control their resources while paying taxes to the federal
government, adding that State Police should also be enshrined in the
Constitution.
On his part, the Chairman of the occasion and Senate
Leader, Senator Ndoma Egba, thanked the participants for their support for the
constitution review process, expressing optimism that the outcome of the
process would satisfy the yearnings of Nigerians, urging them to contribute
positively to the process.
