RSG To Upgrade Facilities In RIVPOLY
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has disclosed plans by the
state government to upgrade facilities and improve the academic environment at
the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori.
Governor Amaechi
said the upgrading of the state polytechnic was necessary to meet standards set
for institutions of higher learning and
also produce graduates whose technical and professional competence would not be
doubted anywhere in their areas of specialisation.
Governor Amaechi spoke at the Bori Polytechnic convocation
for 9,000 graduands at the Polytechnic’s 14th to 17th convocation in Bori last
weekend
The Rivers State governor said, “the first step is to hire
lecturers, equip the school with the necessary scientific infrastructure that
you need to teach these children.
“Rivers State is no longer waiting; we are beginning to
produce and do things that will grow the economy, we need the manpower to grow
the economy.
“We must now begin to equip the school with scientific
equipment. We want to see this school get back on its feet.”
“I agree completely that your management and the council
have done well but beyond what they have done in terms of administering the
school you also need to ensure that they have the necessary environment and the
necessary facilities to run a proper polytechnic”, he added.
According to Governor Amaechi, upgrading the Rivers State
Polytechnic would even produce for the state the much needed middle-level
manpower to run some of the state’s investments in agriculture and other
sectors of the economy.
Earlier, Rector of the Polytechnic, Obianko Nwolu-Elechi,
who was recently appointed from within the polytechnic community had
congratulated Governor Amaechi for financially sustaining the polytechnic but
said the institution needed more assistance from the government.
In his convocation address, Chairman of the Governing
Council of the Rivers State Polytechnic, Prof. Augustine Ahiauzu said the
“overall focus has been toward raising the polytechnic to an appreciable standard, where students will acquire the
appropriate learning that will enable them meet the middle-level manpower needs
of Rivers State in particular and Nigeria in general”.
