Rep Assures On More Constituencies
A member of the House of Representatives, Dan Abia (Jnr), has pledged to ensure the
creation of more constituencies in Akwa Ibom at the National Assembly. Abia said this while addressing stakeholders
and elders of Esit Eket on Monday.
He said the population, land mass and other criteria as
required by the law would not pose a challenge as the areas had already met the
set criteria, adding that efforts were underway to sponsor a bill for the
creation of more state constituencies.
Abia argued that a situation where two local governments
shared a state constituency was not good enough for effective representation.
He added that with election litigation left behind, he would
focus on bringing benefits to members of the constituency by floating
empowerment schemes for youths, women and elders, and attracting development to
the area.
The lawmaker said he was poised to make meaningful
contributions at the National Assembly to justify the mandate given to him in
spite of the one year delay before his swearing in.
Abia also said that he had taken an inventory of projects,
contractors and extent of work done within the federal constituency.
He noted that with his inauguration and appointment into
some vital committees, it became imperative to take stock and make up for the
lost years.
The lawmaker who is also a Member, House Committee on
Petroleum Upstream, Securities/Intelligence said that he would set up a
well-equipped constituency office with eight directorates to be manned by
competent personnel.
Abia pledged regular interaction with the constituency,
adding that constructive ideas, suggestions and even petitions against any
perceived injustice, were welcome to enable him present same during plenary.
The Esit Eket Council Chairman, Chief. Ibanga Etang, in his
remarks advised the electorate to bury their political differences and be
united as a single family.
He urged Esit Eket indigenes in leadership positions to form
a synergy between the appointed and elected representatives to focus on
holistic development of the council.
Sen. Etang Umoyo, in his contribution, applauded
stakeholders and supporters for their resolve while the litigation for the Eket
seat at the House of Representatives lasted.
Umoyo noted that although inaugurated on July 12, he would
be a force to reckon with by his colleagues in the legislature considering his
intellectual endowment.
