Mobile Court Sentences Sanitation Defaulters In Kano, Edo
One hundred and nine persons were penalised in Kano on Saturday by the Mobile Court for not observing the monthly sanitation.
The Public Relations Officer of the state Ministry of Environment, Malama Maryam Abdulkadir, disclosed this to newsmen.
She said that the state task force committee under the chairmanship of the state Commissioner for Environment went round the metropolis to fish out the defaulters.
Abdulkadir said three filling stations were also found operating within the hours of the exercise which showed their failure to comply.
She added that the filling stations, Jahun Oil and Bamod oil were fined N30,000 each while Na’adade petroleum paid N40,000.
Abdulkadir called on the people to desist from violating the sanitation law as the aim was geared towards ensuring their good health.
She said a plastic company known as Tajuddeen, was also fined N100,000 for non-compliance with the law.
In Benin, a mobile sanitation court sitting at Oredo, Edo, has also sentenced 26 persons to three days imprisonment each for flouting the environmental sanitation law.
Our correspondent reports that the Magistrate, Alfred Osamudiamwen, however, gave the convicts an option of fine of N5, 000 each.
Although a total of 37 persons were arrested for violation of environmental sanitation, the court discharged and acquitted 11 of the suspects on grounds of health and age.
Osamudiamwen, while admonishing the convicts, said that it was sad that rather than stay at home and observe the monthly sanitation exercise, “these persons decided to flout the law.”
“And anybody who flouts the law should be prepared to face the consequences thereof,” he said.
Residents of Edo are expected to observe every last Saturday of the month as general sanitation day with restriction of movement between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.
