NPC Tasks Nigerians On Family Planning
A federal commissioner in the National Population Commission (NPC) in Rivers, Mr. Charles Wokoma, has advised Nigerians to plan the size of their families to avoid future problems.
Wokoma gave the advice in Port Harcourt at the World population Day celebration, saying that small family was the trend in the world.
He said Nigeria could not afford to lag behind when other countries had started planning for small families based on economic considerations.
Wokoma said the use of contraceptives in Nigeria was only 10 per cent and described the figure as low.
He explained that large families and increased population had both social and economic implications, especially if the population was not trained.
The commissioner also said that the emergence of militancy and other crimes in the society was as a result of large families because some parents could not train their children.
“The inability by some parents not to train their children leads to crimes; it is difficult to walk freely in Port Harcourt at night because of insecurity. “In some countries, you could be outside at 2a.m. without any problem,” he said.
He advised women to resist the temptation of having many children and stressed that having many births could put the life of a woman at risk
Wokoma said a small family size of two or three was advisable as it would support better training and less pressure on parents.
He advised parents to give their children sex education to minimise cases of unwanted pregnancies
The commissioner said although NPC was working hard to register births, it had not been able to register 30 per cent of births in the country.
“We have struggled to register births; it requires registrars, pay them well and get results,” he said.
He said NPC had hired ad hoc registrars and that Rivers had eight of them.
The commissioner said if births and deaths were registered, national head counts would not be too necessary.
The Rivers Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samson Parker said the government had built many health facilities across the state to bring health care closer to the people.
Parker, who was represented by a Director in the ministry, Mr. Onengibio Harry said people shied away from using the facilities and that the government could not force them to do so.
