Edo Governorship Candidates Reject State Police
Three formidable candidates for the July 14 Edo governorship election, have kicked against the establishment of State Police as being canvassed in certain quarters.
The candidates, Adams Oshiomhole (ACN), Charles Airhiavbere (PDP) and Solomon Edebiri (ANPP), all expressed their reservations last Thursday, in a live debate organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group (NEDG), in Benin ahead of the election.
Oshiomhole said that even as an incumbent governor, “I am in the minority among my colleagues on the issue of the establishment of state police”.
“This is because I have my concerns and until we have a political elite who recognise that power belong to the people I fear that some governors may just convert the creation as political thugs to go after political opponent rather than for the purpose it would have been created for.”
“I am opposed to its creation because I am concerned about the future of these states where they will become functional.’’
Also, Edebiri said: “I am saying no to state police as any incumbent governor is likely to abuse its use. “I will not recommend the creation of state police in any guise,’’ he said, but argued that “the problem is not creating that apparatus but the ability to instill discipline in that body.
“It is not enough to buy guns, vehicles and state of the art crime fighting equipment but it is about how government is able to instill in the officers discipline and how to imbibe the culture and ethics and practice of the people within that community.
“And added to that, is that government should have the political will to provide commensurate welfare packages for the police.’’
The PDP candidate, Airhiabvere, said the Federal Government should be encouraged to maintain the operations of the police nationwide.
The candidates also reeled out their policies and programmes with which they separately tried to woo the listeners and viewers at home, promising them better living conditions and increased provision of development projects in the state.
The Chairman of NEDG, Mr Taiwo Alimi, said the debates which had become very critical aspect of the Nigerian electoral process, always provided the electorate the opportunity to access the candidates and their programme, policies and blueprint first hand.
This, he explained, would assist the electorate to make informed choices.
