Committee Moves To Preserve Eleme Language
As part of effort to promote the cultural heritage of Eleme ethnic nationality, the Eleme language committee has pledged to provide materials for the teaching and learning of Eleme language in schools.
The chairman, Eleme language committee, Dr. Isaac Eji Ngulabe, who disclosed this at a workshop in Port Harcourt noted that the situation is aimed at preventing the language from extinction.
Dr. Ngulube who is a lecturer in the Department of English at University of Port Harcourt stressed for policies that will preserve the nation’s indigenous languages.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Hon Oji Ngofa, who was represented by the Chief of Staff Eleme Local Government Area, Hon. Fineman Olugwe, pledged the council’s support for the actualisation of the project.
Hon. Ngofa also advised the committee to assist the council in its developmental efforts.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Education Research and Development Council (NERDC), Prof. Godswill Obioma, stressed the need for governments and associations to seek technical support from the council on the issue of indigenous languages.
Prof. Obioma, who was represented by Dr. Chinyere Nwagbara described the workshop as very timely, noting that it would go a long way in the development of Eleme language.
